With the Ascension to the papacy of Paul V Borghese, the Cardinal “Nepote” Scipione devoted himself to an intense work to make his Senese family become part of the prominent ones in Rome.
Art was more then a status at that time and Cardinal Scipio worked to have the best architectures for the Borghese family properties and at the same time through the systematic acquisition of works of art, made its collection one of the largest and most valuable of his (and our) time.
Cardinal Scipione was an early patron of Bernini and an avid collector of works by Caravaggio, other paintings and sculptures worth of note include Titian, Raphael, Domenichino, Barocci, Canova and more….
